Lapidary is the art of engraving, cutting, and polishing stones and gems. It takes great skill to accent the most beautiful patterns and colors in natural stones. When I walk the beaches I can see the potential in so many stones and we are fortunate to have an abundance of agates, epidote, quartz and jasper. I even occasionally go on mining trips to add more unique materials to my inventory but at the core of what I do most of the materials I acquire are found or hand picked by me and a few close to me who also take pleasure in the hunt for the next treasure to play with.
Sea glass in all of it's various colors, when fully rubbed by the ocean have a juicy gemmy quality to them. Sometimes I find pieces that are almost perfect but they contain sharp edges. These pieces I "save" by carving them into different shapes doing my best to preserve as much of the "naturally rubbed" texture as I can. Nothing goes to waste here. It's all treasure to me.
I gather many types of shells but my favorite shell material to work with is the quahog clam. The white pieces I use as "beach paper" putting artwork onto them. For the purples I often carve them into a variety of shapes.
